On 2 March 2018, Naked Heart Foundation started registering participants for the international conference “Effective technologies for teaching children with ASD”, which will be taking place from 2 to 4 April in Nizhny Novgorod.
In Russia, the vast majority of children and young people with severe autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are marginalized and do not attend nursery or school. Parents of children with ASD are generally told that their children are not ready to attend school or preschool or are advised to educate them at home. As a result, these children are deprived of the opportunity to develop their social skills and learn new things and their parents are forced to give up work to look after their kids at home. In fact, most children with ASD are perfectly capable of learning in school and can achieve high grades. However, they tend to get tired and distracted easily and struggle with social interaction, and they have special needs in terms of sensory integration. Therefore, it is very difficult for them to benefit from mainstream education programmes.
In order to successfully teach children with ASD in schools and preschools, it is important to understand those children’s special needs and to train school staff in the use of proven technologies and special curricula, taking into account the individual requirements of each child. If a child struggles with the school syllabus or behaves inappropriately in the classroom, it is not the fault of the child or their family – it is simply that the classroom conditions and the syllabus do not meet the child’s needs.
Since 2013, the Naked Heart Foundation has been introducing modern, effective technologies for working with children with ASD in educational establishments. Currently, these projects are being implemented in 10 schools and 27 preschools in Nizhny Novogorod, St Petersburg, Tver, Tula and Moscow.
The conference speakers will include Naked Heart project participants and international child development experts.
The topics covered in the presentations and master classes will include: models of teaching children with ASD in educational establishments; intensive behavioural programmes for preschool children with ASD; training staff to work with children with ASD in educational establishments; developing communication in children with ASD; and comprehensive support for parents of children with ASD.
On the morning of the final day of the conference, the participants will be invited to visit one of the sites where the Foundation is working with children with ASD. You can sign up for a visit on the first day of the conference at the registration desk.
Staff of educational establishments that teach children with ASD are invited to take part in the conference – teachers, psychologists, speech therapists, heads and deputy heads, tutors and special education assistants, and also parents of children with ASD.
The registration is now closed. We selected the participants on a competition basis and gave priority to organisations that provide free services to children and families.

The conference will be held at the «Sheraton Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin», located on Teatralny Ploshchad, Nizhny Novgorod.
