The Naked Heart Foundation’s Expert Committee has selected four organisations that will take part in the Summer with Purpose project in 2018:
– “Markhamat” charity foundation, Ufa
– “Osobye ludi” (“Special people”) association, Yekaterinburg
– “Integratsiya” (“Integration”), Kemerovo
– Centre for social adaptation, rehabilitation and habilitation, Saint Petersburg
The Foundation experts paid special attention to the methods and technologies used by staff, not only during the camp sessions but also in their daily work. The following factors were also assessed:
– Overall quality of the application
– Link between the camp services and programmes implemented throughout the year
– Suitability of the camp (with/without parents, services offered, tents or solid structures, etc.)
– Additional sources of funding for the camp
– Additional seminars and training sessions on support programmes for children with autism for the staff members
t will be a busy summer for the winners. On 13-15 June they will receive training in Niznhy Novgorod. We will provide them with 400,000 roubles of funding for their summer camps, where they will use new evidence-based methods of work.
In August we will take their staff members to our camps in Saint Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod, where they will see how evidence-based support strategies help children and young adults with autism feel comfortable in summer camp settings, learn new skills and become more independent.
Naked Heart experts Tatiana Morozova and Svyatoslav Dovbnya, as well as director of the Rising Sun summer camp, occupational therapist and professor at the University of New Mexico Kathleen “Mo” Taylor, will supervise the participants.
The NGO staff will learn to use evidence-based support strategies in their daily work with children who have special needs. In that way, the Summer with Purpose project will enhance the effectiveness of their services all year round.
What is Summer with Purpose?
he aim of the project is to give children and young adults with autism spectrum disorders an opportunity to go to a summer camp run by highly trained specialists. We train NGO staff to use evidence-based strategies that help people with autism develop their communication and social skills and feel comfortable in new environments. Thanks to the Summer with Purpose project in 2017, over 200 children and young adults with special needs attended summer and autumn camps and 144 specialists and volunteers learnt new evidence-based methods of work. Summer with Purpose is a joint project by the Naked Heart Foundation and the Center for Development and Disability at the University of New Mexico. For many of the children and young adults who attend the camps, it is their first ever experience of holidaying without parental supervision, which really helps them develop their independence. As for the specialists, they are able to implement new working methods not only in the camp setting, but also in their day-to-day work, and to pass on their new knowledge to colleagues, volunteers and parents.
