Arkady Tarakanov lives in Nizhny Novgorod, he has autism. He took part in our Education Project and as a result went to school where teachers were trained to work with children like Arkady. School had really changed his life and the life of hisfamily. He has started showing interest in things. Whereas before he had no real focus, school is opening up new opportunities for him. Watch this video to hear his story:
Tatiana Tarakanova, Arkady’s mother:
“We had a problem – he couldn’t write. He just couldn’t hold the pen in his hand. But at the same time, he could easily twist screws out of the wall. So his fingers were strong, but not trained for writing. Now he can write. During our first year here, he was in the programme for children with mental disabilities and information was just drummed into them. But in the second year, we got him into this programme and the teacher approached the teaching process from a completely different angle. And what an amazing breakthrough it was! My son started to count, to write, he started reading and on top of all that, he had a really big breakthrough socially. His communication improved – now he can simply tell us what he wants to eat or drink or if he needs anything. He has started eating with the other kids in the dining room, whereas before he couldn’t eat in front of people.
His favourite subject is music. He always looks forward to it – “now maths has finished, we’re going to music, we’re going to music” – and he’s allowed to use the musical instruments himself. It was a shock to me when he stood up in class and sang. He didn’t sing softly, under his breath, but loud and clear in front of everyone.
He never ceases to amaze me. I’m proud of him, it’s wonderful!
He has so much potential, which I’d probably never have known about if he wasn’t in school.”
